We are pleased to bring you the following opportunity from Engage with China, an educational charity building China literacy and understanding in UK schools:

Amongst our various initiatives we established a fully-funded scholarship scheme in 2023 for 15/16 year old British students. Applications are now open for those taking their GCSEs this summer. This is a life-changing opportunity and we would be grateful if you could share / like / repost via your various networks. More details below and a flier with a QR code if that is easier to share

ENGAGE WITH CHINA A-LEVEL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME IN CHINA
In 2023 we launched a fully funded scholarship programme in partnership with Wycombe Abbey School in China for British students to study their A-levels at their school in Changzhou. The curriculum is all delivered in English and the scholars will be taught mandarin every week. More details of what is included I highlight below. Our first cohort of scholars are already benefiting hugely from the experience as well as building their global perspective and a stand-out CV!

This opportunity is life-changing and unique. Our current cohort have come from schools across the country, including mainly state-maintained schools and are having a fantastic time and making friends with Chinese peers in their school. I accompanied our Scholars to China in September 2023 and, 6 months in, they are flourishing in their new environment, benefitting from a wide range of extra-curricular, cultural and STEM activities and, of course, discovering China for themselves.

The scholarship includes:
  • Accommodation
  • Tuition
  • All food
  • Cultural trips
  • Uniform
  • Visa fee
  • One return flight per year
  • 2 x extra curricular activities such as DofE, rowing, music lessons, fencing
  • Mandarin lessons for beginner / intermediate / advanced

This year we are extending the scholarships to enable not just 10 but 30 British scholars to take advantage of the opportunity. This means that, depending on their A-level choices, they will have the option of going to one of the three Wycombe Abbey schools in either Changzhou, Nanjing or Hangzhou, all within easy reach of Shanghai by high speed rail. I have visited all of the school sites and the facilities are first-class.

I can also vouch for the pastoral care, the academic level of excellence and the outcomes in terms of next steps and university options. The school leadership includes bi-lingual staff and the Senior Leadership Team include mainly native English speakers. I have visited all three campuses in the Wycombe Abbey China group and they are second-to-none in terms of facilities, courses on offer, music, performing arts and sporting activities.

One scholar’s Mum said to me, “you have given my son his dream!” The Scholars themselves are so grateful for the opportunity and are flourishing.

The closing date is Monday next week but we appreciate that this won’t be for everyone so those who are keen will turn round their application fast! Going abroad for two years aged 16 is for those who have imagination, a global outlook and a sense of adventure. Our first cohort are 6 months into their scholarship and are having the most incredible time and are so grateful for the opportunity. No previous China or mandarin skills are required to apply. Application form must be accompanied by a Headteacher’s letter.
